An essential component of your child's education is "YOU".  I appreciate all of your support!

Your child is responsible for maintaining his/her assignment notebook on a daily basis.  He/she must write all assignments in the notebook and check out with myself and his/her homeroom teacher before he/she leaves school for the day.  Please sign or initial your child's assignment notebook nightly.  When you do so, it is your way of indicating that you are aware of your child's homework and have helped with its completion.  Your child's notebook will be checked the next day for your signature.

Every Friday we will take a Spelling test.  The spelling list will be sent home in your child's assignment notebook the Friday before.  This will enable you to study over the weekend as well as every week night until the test.  Please study with your child a minimum of 15-20 minutes every day so that he/she will be ready for the test on Friday. You may need to study more depending upon the difficulty of the spelling test.  There may be some weeks, such as holiday weeks or the week of PARCC testing, that we do not have a Spelling test.  This information will be passed along to you in your child's assignment notebook.  Otherwise, expect a Spelling list every week.

Your child will have a library  book that he/she will need to read daily at home. Please have your child read at least 20 minutes every day.  The Reading Log will also need to be completed daily and turned in first thing Monday morning.

Becoming a good reader takes practice.  As a parent you can help your child by:

  • Building reading accuracy.  As your child is reading aloud, point out words he/she missed and help him/her read these words correctly.  If you stop to focus on a word have your child reread the whole sentence to be sure he/she understands the meaning.

  • Building reading fluency.  Children need practice in reading comfortably and with expression using books they know.

  • Building reading comprehension.  Talk with your child about what he/she is reading.  Ask about new words. Talk about what happened in the story.  Ask about the characters, places, and events that took place.  Ask what new information he/she has learned from the book.
